Requested move 29 May 2018
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: consensus to move the articles on the politicians to Thomas Garrett (Virginia politician) and Tommy Garrett (Nebraska politician), and no consensus to move the other pages at this time, per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 22:42, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thomas Garrett → Thomas Garrett (abolitionist)
- Thomas Garrett (disambiguation) → Thomas Garrett
- Tom Garrett Jr. → Thomas Garrett (Virginia politician)
- Tommy Garrett (politician) → Tommy Garrett (Nebraska politician)
– The abolitionist does not appear to be a dominant "primary" topic, at least based on page views, when considering all seven of the other people who are identified on the disambiguation page. The current Virginia politician seldom seems to be referred to as "Jr." in sources, and seems more often referred to as "Thomas" than "Tom" in sources. There are articles about him in the last 24 hrs by NPR, Newsweek, Washington Post, the Denver Post, Yahoo, CNBC, Huffpost, etc., that all use "Thomas" and don't use "Jr." and mostly don't use "Tom". His official site uses a mixture of Thomas and Tom and does not use "Jr."; on its main page there are two "Thomas" and one "Tom". Clarifying the disambiguator term for the Nebraska politician would also help distinguish him from the other two politicians. —BarrelProof (talk) 21:41, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
- Support politician moves, Oppose others - complex request here. The abolitionist and the Virginia politician are the only two at the topic of the page views, both far ahead of the others, and the Virginia fellow has only been there during his election. The abolitionist seems to have the edge in long-term significance. Its hard to parse a decent Google Ngram with so many potential options, but the "Thomas Garrett"s are certainly ahead and have been since the time of the abolitionist. With 3 politicians, they should all have the additional disambiguation, for sure, even if there are minor name differences. -- Netoholic @ 01:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- Support above all look okay to me. In ictu oculi (talk) 15:56, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

- Support: no opinion on other recommendations, but moving this page to Thomas Garrett (Virginia politician) makes sense to me. Marquardtika (talk) 16:03, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- Support all. No primary topic. Thomas Tom and Tommy are all the same name. "Jr." is not sufficient. There are multiple politicians, and "Nebraska" helps with recognisability considerably. "abolitionist" definitely helps with recognisability, it is squarely what he is known for. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 04:05, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Support politician moves, Oppose others per excellent analysis by Netoholic. The abolitionist is the clear winner by long-term significance, given how long ago he lived and how his page views are enduring to this day. — Amakuru (talk) 21:06, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
